"They all say the same thing.
No to Home Depot.
The unanimity of one community to this
magnitude is unlike that which I have
ever seen. "

More Ideas for the
former K-Mart site!
ACTION ALERT!

WRITE A LETTER TODAY!

Home Depot filed their new application for Project Permit Compliance
Review on April 22, 2008. The application is currently being reviewed by
City Planning. The case has been assigned to Chief Zoning
Administrator, Michael LoGrande, for the Environmental Assessment. It
is critical NOW to let the City know that a full Environmental Impact
Report must be required.

It will make a difference if you write a letter and let the City know about
the impacts this large warehouse operation will have in our
neighborhood. Be polite, be firm, and use your own words.

Traffic, Air, Noise, and Water Pollution
Home Depot expects 18-20 diesel truck deliveries per day from their
suppliers. The heavy equipment used by Home Depot in their daily
operations will negatively affect the quality of life for our community
with increased levels of noise and diesel pollution. The property abuts
Haines Canyon Flood Control Channel.

Demand a Comprehensive Traffic Study
Foothill Boulevard is the only commercial street in Sunland-Tujunga,
and the surrounding residential streets are too narrow for the overflow
traffic. The proposed store is over a mile from the Sunland exit off the
210. Let the City know your concerns about streets and freeways
surrounding Sunland-Tujunga. If truckers and contractors use the
Sunland exit from the I-5, traffic in Shadow Hills will be impacted.
Delivery trucks and contractors might use Foothill Boulevard through
Lake View Terrace to approach Sunland-Tujunga. The truckers will
surely find a way to avoid the 210/2 or the 210/118 interchanges because
of the new traffic signals that have been installed.

Land Use
A Home Depot warehouse in this prime location is inappropriate for this
residential community. The property adjoins residential backyards and a
senior mobile home park. There are homes directly across the street
from the Woodward Ave. driveway. Apperson Elementary School is less
than 500 feet away. Our Community Plan promises us a Community
Center - pedestrian friendly shopping and entertainment that serves the
needs of the neighborhood.

The Building May be Unsafe
The construction documents submitted by Home Depot in 2006 contain
several errors, some significant. The new openings for the HVAC
weaken the roof, "dead load" calculations for the roof are too low, and
an incorrect seismic factor was used. The project site is in proximity to a
known earthquake fault. Demand that new construction plans be
submitted with the new application. The new building plans must be
reviewed carefully for compliance with current seismic safety standards.
Several pages of the previously submitted plans were for  another
Home Depot location; the City must make sure the new plans apply to
this specific site.

We suggest sending your original letter to Mr. LoGrande, and a copy to
the other city officials. Also, send a copy to us!

Lowe's is Coming
to Pacoima!

Could this be the real
reason Home Depot
desperately wants to
open the
Sunland-Tujunga store?

Lowes is opening a 134,000 sq ft
store on the corner of Paxton &
San Fernando. It is only about
1.5 miles as the crow flies from
their San Fernando store.
The plot thickens!

What Could the Former K-Mart site be
besides a Home Depot?

A Pedestrian Friendly Shopping Center that Serves the
Needs Of the Community?

Shops and Restaurants? General Merchandise that we
currently don't have?
A bookstore? A Movie Theater? Something for the Kids
to do? A Bowling Alley perhaps?

It can be many of these things. The Community Plan says
it must be.
Imagine the Possibilities!
This is the only site large enough in the area
to develop as an anchor retail center.
If Home Depot gets their way, there will not be
an opportunity to have a Community Center
for at least 2 generations
(
that's how long HD holds the lease).
That's why we fight, that's why we all must
work together to stop HD from
stealing our future.
Something like the renderings below
or Home Depot's
Industrial Warehouse Store?
